Headteacher's Weekly Message: 20th October 2017

Sarah Bonnell Cross-country Team

Our Key Stage 3 runners did the school proud last Wednesday at the Borough Cross-Country Running competition held at Wanstead Flats with over 10 schools competing. Cross-Country running requires stamina, determination and high levels of fitness. The girls did really well and Ms Emerson, Progress Leader for Year 8 and PE teacher was delighted with their performance ‘I was particularly proud of Dina Benidir 8E who finished in 3rd place, Daphne in Year 9 who finished 4th and Faith Dosomnu 8S who finished 9th, they have been selected to represent Newham in the next stage’. The girls worked so hard around the course, despite the rain and wind! Be Proud

Year 11 Outward Bound Expedition to Ullswater, Lake District

24 excited Year 11 girls, Mr Begley, Ms Ihsan and Ms Brown set-off early on Friday morning for a weekend of outdoor activities in the beautiful Lake District. This educational visit aims to develop the girls’ leadership skills and communication skills. The girls faced some exciting challenges as they participated in cliff jumping into the lake, canoeing, hiking, cook outs and gorge walking. Being resilient and working together as team to overcome the outdoor challenges helps build skills that the girls can use in their everyday school life and in the future in the world of work. Ms Ihsan, Progress Leader for year 11 said ‘The girls really did make us all proud ……facing challenging circumstances together as a team made us realise that we can conquer our fears in GCSEs and life’. Huge thanks to the staff who led the weekend trip and congratulations to Year 11 girls for trying new things and learning from them. Aim High.

Extended Learning Day

On Tuesday 17 October we have the first of our Extended Learning Days giving all students an opportunity to focus on one aspect of learning for the whole day. The theme of this first ELD of the school year was ‘Awareness’ and students in Years 7-10 were involved in a range of different activities to develop their understanding of how to stay healthy and safe. In Year 11 students will extended their learning in Science and RE to gain more knowledge and understanding of some key topics in their GCSE courses in these subjects. The girls visited a Food Bank to learn how charitable giving supports those in need in our local community. In Year 7 students took part in an activity called ‘Sheep and Shepherd’ to develop their communication skills and build trust in others. Year 10 students were involved in Prefect Interviews with professional volunteers from our Business Action Group.

Year 7 Celebration of Learning

On Wednesday 18 October we welcomed parents, families and friends to the Year 7 Celebration of Learning at 4.00pm. Visitors were blown away with the exhibition of work completed by Year 7 during their first half-term at Sarah Bonnell as part of their ‘Exploration project’ in all subjects. It was great hearing from so many parents that they are pleased with the way we have supported their daughter during her first term at Sarah Bonnell and seeing girls showing their families all the high quality work they have produced. Well done Year 7 –teachers are looking forward to seeing you achieve even more in the remainder of the school year.
