Headteacher's Weekly Message: 16th June 2017

This week it has been a real pleasure meeting so many of the new cohort of  Year 7 girls that will be lucky enough to join Sarah Bonnell School in September 2017. This year we have 270 new Year 7 girls joining us and this week alone we have managed to have one-to-one meetings with over 240 of the new girls and their families. The meetings are an important opportunity to welcome them to our school community, share the Sarah Bonnell Way and check we have all the information we need to give these girls a great start to Year 7. I am really looking forward to meeting the girls again on Transition Day on Thursday 26 June and seeing them meet their teachers, the other girls in their tutor group and get to know their way around the school. Aim High new Year 7! Huge thanks to Ms Paine, Assistant Headteacher, Ms Fraser, Year Leader, Ms Spiers and Ms Edgar, Front of House Reception, for everything they have done to make these meetings go so smoothly this week.

On Wednesday Sarah Bonnell hosted the second annual Student Leadership Conference for Newham Community Schools Trust. Student Leaders from Rokeby, Lister and Sarah Bonnell worked together to develop their leadership skills and plan ahead for an environment project that could be delivered across the three schools. The conference began with an inspiring talk from Joanna Abeyie, who at the age of 29, has an impressive portfolio of achievements including establishing herself as a successful journalist, entrepreneur and diversity champion. Joanna took the students, step by step, through her achievements and demonstrated the importance of determination, hard-work and aiming high. Thank you to Joanne for giving up her time to help our students understand how leadership can make a positive difference. Thank you to Lister, Rokeby and Sarah Bonnell staff for working together to make sure this was such a great day for students in our three schools.

Also on Wednesday Ms Griffiths, Head of Drama, and Mr Bentley, Drama and TG Teacher, accompanied our Sarah Bonnell Players to the prestigious Institute of Education in Russell Square to participate in a Theatre in Education workshop planned by trainee drama teachers.  The girls really impressed the staff at IoE and I was very proud to receive an email praising students for the energetic and thoughtful participation. Thank you for being so supportive of our partnership with your school – we really value this positive engagement and look forward to further joint projects with your fantastic staff and students'

At Sarah Bonnell we take great pride in the excellent attendance record of our school which was well above national averages for girls at 96.5% in 2016. I would like to thank parents and carers for the support they give their daughter with minimising absence and ask you to ensure that your daughter continues to be in school every day until the last day of this important term on Friday 21 July. No Excuses.

Finally, thank you to those parents who have acted on my request not to stop or park on the yellow zig-zag lines or double yellow lines on Water Lane. This helps keep all girls safe when crossing the road on the way to and from school. If you have not changed this routine yet please do find  other places to safely drop-off and collect your daughter by car such as Deanery Road or other local side roads.
